Movie Notes.........

1) Identify and describe the different types of transitions used in film/video making.

Cut, Fade and Dissolve

  • Fade in and Fade out- Fade in marks the beginning, Fade out shows the end. By Fading into or out of black it shows the the focus is being moved to something else. Fading out to black and into from black its like passage of time.
  • Dissolve-The blending of two shots to communicate a passage of time or location. Whipple dissolve or cross dissolve. visually smooth transition between one or more shot or scene that dissolves from one shot to the next. Need handles: short sequences which lead up to and follow the transition or dissolve. If you have thirty frame dissolve you need a fifteen frame handle at beginning and end
  • Cut- The point where two shots come together. Can be frequently placed in the scene to show the passing of time or to show different shots. cutting on the action where editor cuts one shot to another to different shot that matches intensity and action of previous shot two shots can show continuity. Rapid cutting sequence of rapid cuts, used for suspenseful

2) What questions should you ask yourself before you place a transition in your film/video?

  • Do i need a transition at this point?
  • What transition will visually enhance my story line?
  • What transition will visually detract from my story?

3) How might you use these transitions in your particular animation?

I would use a fade in when the movie starts and a fade out when it ends. If I wanted to show time passing by really quickly then i would use the dissolve and I could use cuts if I want to switch to different picture

Principle of Harmony

This is a picture of harmony because the colours all go together and are "unified." This picture creates a sense of calmness with the sun setting and the moon rising.

Principle of Variety

This picture shows variety because they are all still ipod nano's in a variety of colours.

Principle of Emphasis

This shows emphasis because when you first look at the picture you would look at the yellow flowers. That is emphasis when one thing draws your attention.

Principle of Balance

This image shows balance because the picture looks even like one side does not have more detail than the other and this picture is symmetrical.

Element of form

Form is usually something with a mass or volume. This is an example of form because it is 3-d

Element of Space

This image shows space because it creates a sense of movement.

Element of shade

This picture shows the element of shade. When a picture is shaded it is usually in black and white and the dark parts are to show emphasis in the picture. The shading can also be used to show the picture in 3-d

Element of Texture

This is an example of the element of texture. Texture is when the picture looks like it can be touched or felt. In this picture it looks like you could touch the rocks and it would feel like how it is in real life.It would be hard and sharp.
